“Life goes on”…
When I was a disgruntled teenager, I remember my dad answering my complaints with the quote, “Life is full of heartache, sorry and disappointment.” Not what a teenager wanted to hear.
Now that I am middle-aged, I sometimes think about my dad and that quote. “Yep”, I think. “It is true.” But I have come to recognize that heartache, sorry and disappointment are the life experiences that also make the little moments of joy and happiness so sweet.
We have a quiet week adjusting to the new normal without Lucy. As sad as we are, we smile at the little moments:
- Whistle happily chasing sticks and waves on the beach
- Horses training at full gallop on the beach at low tide
- The joy of a donkey having his forehead and cowlick brushed
- Happening upon a sea lion resting in the dunes
- Watching Hoti let Travis do all the work of extracting oats from a rolling ball
- Donkeys bobbing for apples
- Chooks enjoying a sunny day
- Going a new direction and as far as we can on the beach
- Whistle napping next to Tim on the couch
- Travis curling into a fetal position on the ground before going belly up
- Hoti laughing
- Hot tubbing on a cold day and naked at night under amazing starry skies
- Whiskey and chocolate
- Chocolate and whiskey
